Job Title: 8A Principal BMS – Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry

Location: Basildon, Essex

Salary: £48,526 – £54,619 per annum

Job type: Permanent, Full-Time

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an 8A Principal BMS, covering Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry, for the essential services laboratories at our two NHS hospitals in south Essex.

Job role:

These are acute hospital medical laboratories analysing approximately 1.2 million samples per year between them. Full blood counts are analysed on Beckman Coulter; coagulation uses Werfen. Clinical biochemistry is mainly processed on Beckman Coulter, backed up with Roche.

The repertoire is routine but includes blood film reporting, malarial parasites, sickle testing, d-dimers, osmolality, xanthochromia, procalcitonin, BNP and cortisol. There is an equivalent laboratory manager for blood transfusion across both sites, with whom you will work closely. Primary care, outpatient samples and specialist work are all analysed offsite at a large hub laboratory.

There are two discipline-specific laboratory managers at the hub. The staffing is shared across the three laboratories and three disciplines, with team managers in all sections at each site. The total staffing is 122 full time equivalents. Point of care testing is separately managed but there is some crossover of staffing. There is a biomedical scientist-led anticoagulant clinic at Southend, which will fall within the remit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You need to provide leadership in this fast-paced environment.
  • You will ensure effective management of staffing and rosters, with a particular focus on multi-skilling and rotation of employees.
  • You will manage equipment and consumables, providing expert knowledge and experience of blood sciences analyser platforms and associated equipment. A thorough understanding of lean workflow principles is required.
  • You will need to be conversant with the setup and use of laboratory information management systems.
  • There is a quality management system to ISO 15189, within which you will be required to operate, particularly getting involved in incident investigation and change control.

We are located at our dedicated hub laboratory in the Basildon industrial area off the A127 and free car parking is available ten minutes’ walk away. SYNLAB is proud to work with the NHS through several hospital partnerships. These partnerships combine clinical excellence with the very best in innovation and transformation.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist
  • MSc / FIBMS / IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent, in a relevant biomedical scientific subject
  • Management qualification to ILM level 3
  • Experience of managing teams on shift rotation
  • Able to work across two hospital sites, which operate 24-hours
  • Able to work with a high degree of accuracy, numeracy, interpretive skills and good problem-solving skills
  • Able to demonstrate a good knowledge and experience of industry standard laboratory information management systems and computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Statistical Packages
  • Working knowledge of Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry techniques and practices
