Job Title: Chief Quality Inspector (Aerospace/Manufacturing)

Location: India Mill, Darwen

Salary: £38,000 to £41,000 dependant on experience.

Job type: Permanent, Full time, 37 hours per week over a 4-day week, Monday to Thursday.

Brookhouse Aerospace is a well-known and respected name in the Aerospace Industry currently in its 71st year, and during this time, the business has seen many positive changes following an MBO in 2021 from Kaman UK.

We are approved Tier 1 and 2 suppliers to the Aerospace and Defence manufacturers in the UK and internationally, such as Airbus, BAE, MBDA, Rolls Royce, Safran and Spirit.

The role:

We are currently searching for an experienced Chief Quality Inspector with at least five years of working experience within an aerospace/manufacturing environment.

The Chief Quality Inspector QA/QC has overall responsibility for ensuring that parts and processes comply with all customers, third party and regulatory requirements and for upholding the relevant strategies and objectives defined by the Quality Department & Brookhouse Aerospace Limited.

The Chief Quality Inspector QA/QC Lead also manages and monitors the inspection of parts and manufactured products in Composites, Metallics, Surface Treatment & Finishing Surface Treatments /Processes ensuring that no defective product leaves the business and leads to customer return/escape.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Chief Quality Inspector QA/QCA drives performance of his/her team by leading, communicating clear job expectations with respect to Work To lists, planning, monitoring fulfilment and appraising job results; whilst ensuring product/work flows smoothly through the final inspection department and on to dispatch in a timely manner.
  • Rule-driven and system focused by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures to ensure that quality product is sent to the customer.
  • Develop staff in line with the Global Skills Matrix and maintain training programs in conjunction with Human Resources to ensure that all personnel can perform competently for current and future needs and have the necessary skills to perform their duties in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Develop & coach the inspection Team and execute performance management when required.
  • Drive & Lead S.Q.C.D.P. and looking to implement Lean – Continuous Improvement for the inspection department leading to improved product/processes.
  • Communicate clear expectations and keep the team informed of matters appertaining to their job and business expectations.
  • Monitor employee work performance relative to expectations and maintain material/workflow through the Final Inspection.
  • Implement 5S workplace organisation and always maintain a safe and clean work environment by educating and directing personnel daily.
  • Ensure all Inspection Staff have the relevant product knowledge and are following all the company’s quality procedures & standards.
  • Support NPI, FAIR’S & Daily inspections.
  • Ensure all non-conforming work is segregated, clearly identified, and reported to MRB via the NCR process.
  • Facilitate resolution of inspection criteria interpretation problems
  • Generates reports of conditions found during inspection activities, notifies operations and Quality Assurance/Quality Control management of significant problems, and completes documentation necessary to attest to the satisfactory completion of inspection or test activities. Provide technical clarification and assistance
  • Carry out RCCA / 5Why investigations to resolve technical disputes over Quality issues and to liaise with Customers where necessary.

The Candidate:

  • Good Mechanical Engineering background to a level of HNC preferably to have Composite Knowledge and Be competent to read and understand Engineering Drawings and specifications and be able to convey this information to others/suppliers/inspectors/customers.
  • To be able to use Inspection/measurement tools to a competent level, preferably time served Quality within a manufacturing engineering environment.
  • 5 years plus previous quality experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Good working knowledge of SAP/Epicor & MRP systems
  • Lean / 6 Sigma expertise desirable
  • Excellent customer focus, with the ability to work with many external stakeholders.
  • Competent with MS Office and other computer-based databases and programs to enable the use of internal bespoke tools.
  • Preferable to have internal audit experience to support the company’s AS9100 / NADCAP approvals.
  • To engage in continuous improvement to strengthen the quality techniques, processes, and quality systems within the business.
