About us:

SERVE is a charity established in 1981, registered as a charity in 1995, and based in Rushden, Northamptonshire. We support the North Northamptonshire residents as well as lead on Countywide Projects to reduce isolation amongst the Older Person’s population. Our charitable activities involve a range of services for the elderly and adults with disabilities in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. These include, but not limited to:

  • Domestic Care and Personal Care for the elderly and adults with disabilities in their own homes
  • A range of physical, mental and social activities for our beneficiaries in general and for specific groups amongst the people we serve
  • Community transport which includes our own accessible minibuses and cars provided by volunteer drivers.
  • Countywide Befriending at Scale in partnership with other VCSE organisations
  • Informal Carers respite support

Some 5,000 elderly and disabled people benefit from one or more of the above services.

About the role:

We are looking for a Cook who would like to make a real difference to people lives. The role will be 9.30-15.00 Mondays & Wednesdays initially (building to 3 days per week).

The ideal candidate:

  • A catering qualification
  • One year’s experience working in a similar kitchen environment
  • Able to work to a budget
  • Able to plan the required components for interesting and varied menus for service users as discussed with Day Centre Team Leader
  • Able to prepare the homemade hot and cold food as per the menu discussed with Day Centre Team Leader
  • Maintain the kitchen to a professional EHO standard, clean and tidy
  • Assist with serving drinks and washing up during quiet periods
  • Ability to communicate well with staff and centre volunteers
  • Ability to deal with all aspects of health & safety in a kitchen environment
  • Knowledge to complete the Food Hygiene daily records as required
  • Stock control of hardware available in the kitchen
  • Stock control of menu requirements
  • Able to complete online food shopping orders for menu requirements
  • Ability to work alone being adaptable with ability to work on own initiative
  • Experience working with older people and their families
  • Understanding of the issues faced by people with dementia and their carers
  • Experience of working in accordance with Health & Safety procedures and policies
  • Ability to work alone and/or part of a team
  • Knowledge of working within the voluntary sector
