Job Title: Deputy Head of Grounds

Location: Ware, Hertfordshire

Salary: £25,000 – £30,000

Job Type: Full time, Permanent

Our 400-acre site with its large leafy grounds, impressive playing fields and attractive school buildings offers modern facilities in a country setting, providing a safe and stimulating environment for young minds. With excellent transport links and only 30 minutes by train to central London stations, the College is 20 minutes’ drive from junction 25 of the M25, immediately off the A10. Also within easy access is London Stansted airport, which is a 20-minute drive.

The Role

The grounds of the College consist of 400 acres, comprising parkland and sports facilities. Grounds near to the main buildings require regular maintenance.

Responsibilities include

  • The maintenance of the College grounds and sports pitches.
  • Supervision of the grounds staff, including work shadowing, training, timekeeping and discipline matters.
  • The maintenance of equipment, servicing and keeping records. Also ensuring staff are trained on the equipment and recording training.
  • Security of buildings and equipment, to include the safe storage of chemicals and fuel. Updating the C.O.S.H.H. Register.
  • Managing the departmental budget.
  • Liaising with contractors employed by the College to ensure that all work carried out meets requirements.
  • You may also be required to undertake other duties of an appropriate level and nature as and when requested by the Headmaster, Senior Leadership Team and Head of Department.

Ideal candidate

  • NVQ level 2 Sports Turf Maintenance or IOG National Technical Certificate or JOG National Technical Certificate; or BTEC First Diploma/First Certificate in Horticulture; or National Certificate in Turf Science and Sports Ground Management; or City and Guilds National Certificate in Horticulture or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in grounds and sports pitch maintenance.
  • Experience in the use of grounds maintenance equipment such as hedge cutters, strimmer’s etc.
  • Hold a valid driving licence.
  • 2 years’ experience in management (Desirable)

  • Pension: Employee contribution 4% College contribution 8.5%.
