Job Title: Lead Science Technician – Biology

Location: Hulme, Manchester

Salary: £24,464 – £25,894 per annum

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

Purpose of the role:

Line management responsibilities for Biology as delegated by Head of Department.

To work as part of a team to service the laboratories with primary oversight for the biology department, so that staff and students can carry out practical work efficiently, accurately and safely.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To take the lead in supporting the biology department and be the preferred first point of contact with specific departmental matters
  • To work closely with the Head of Department/Second in Department and attend all departmental meetings
  • To manage the departmental timetable on behalf of the biology technician team and to coordinate the delivery of the practical activities as specified in the scheme of work
  • To advise the technician team on departmental matters and the need for any additional support in consultation with the team leader, where appropriate
  • To ensure the safe custody of equipment and consumables within the science faculty, maintaining records of stock and identifying equipment for maintenance and repair
  • To prepare materials for whole class practical’s, demonstrations and practical examinations
  • To include, where necessary, the accurate and clear labelling of equipment e.g. bacterial samples, food test reagents, animal and plant specimens, microscope slide etc
  • To monitor stock levels of consumables e.g. petri dishes, syringes, pipettes, reagents, safety equipment etc. and to complete internal requisition forms as part of the process to maintain good stock levels
  • To receive chemicals, equipment biological materials and to ensure all recorded items have been delivered in good condition as per the delivery note
  • To source materials that are not readily available or need special handling. This will include approaching non-traditional education suppliers for items such as fish heads, heart and lungs, maggots, locusts, plant material etc.
  • To purchase goods from external sources for which transport costs will be reimbursed or transport will be provided
  • To maintain good housekeeping standards
  • To ensure all materials are stored neatly and in an organised way
  • To ensure equipment is kept safe from accidental damage and can be located and accessed easily by any member of the technician team
  • To provide technical advice within own area of expertise i.e. biology for teachers and students as required, e.g. whole class practicals, demonstrations, disposal of biological waste etc
  • To check laboratory equipment, models, visual aids etc. and where appropriate to service and repair such items or to make arrangements for the work to be carried out by contractors e.g. microscopes

About you:

Essential:

  • Previous experience of providing technical and general support within a Science
  • A good knowledge of health and safety issues relating to science laboratories and the use of equipment and chemicals
  • Ability to delegate work
  • Ability to organise stock and maintain accurate records
  • Excellent standards of literacy and numeracy
  • Ability to work with other staff as a team
  • Good motivational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Evidence of commitment to Continuous Professional Development
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, or substantial relevant experience that demonstrates a high order of literacy, numeracy and analytical skills
  • Flexibility and a readiness to undertake a wide range of tasks
  • Committed to Equality and Diversity

Desirable

  • Previous experience within a team leader role
  • Specialist knowledge of Biology
  • A good knowledge of the use of biology equipment
  • Ability to organise stock and maintain accurate records
  • A clear understanding of developments in post-16 education
