Purpose of the role:

Being part of a well-established and highly successful company, you will work within the New Process Development team to support our fermentation processes (enzyme production) and microbiology projects.

The microbiology technician role is hands-on and requires out of hours and weekend working to support our fermentation processes. The laboratory role is to carry out all the essential microbiology tasks and activities to successfully support our pilot and production fermentations and to complete our enzyme development projects and enzyme production processes.

Need to know:

  • Aseptic laboratory techniques for microbiology and molecular biology.
  • A good theoretical knowledge of microbiology/molecular biology.
  • Protein analysis techniques including SDS-PAGE.
  • Laboratory housekeeping.
  • Microsoft Office.

Need to be able to do: (Key activities)

  • Technically competent in all microbiology activities for supporting our pilot and production fermentation processes: glycerol stock preparation, setting up shake flasks (seed train), OD600nm measurement, purity plate tests (streaking out for single colonies, spread plates).
  • Working weekend / out of hours for accommodating requirements from our production team.
  • Technically competent in performing microbiology tasks for enzyme development projects including DNA transformations, setting up shake flasks for expression trials and sampling and inoculum development
  • Technically competent in use of microscope including colony identification and contamination identification.
  • Follow and complete batch records and work instructions for laboratory tasks.
  • Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.
  • Reporting data to NPD scientists in agreed timeline
  • Technically competent in performing SDS-PAGE and Bradford Protein assays.
  • Planning and organising within and outside of projects
