Job Title: MS SQL / Access Developer

Location: Mostly remote working, but expected to visit onsite (mostly London, occasionally Purfleet, Hastings or Lancing) roughly 4-6 times per year

Salary: £45,000 per annum

Job Type: Part time, Contract

Working Days: 2 – 4 Days Per Week

Recorra is a leading circular economy company, providing recycling, data destruction and office supplies services in London and the South East. We were formed by Friends of the Earth in 1988 and now operate as an independent commercial organisation; we are born environmentalists.

About the Role:

This role is to replace a developer who has worked closely alongside our business since the beginning of this product but is looking to retire in the next 12-18 months. We are looking for someone to come onboard and work with this developer for an extended period to get to understand the product and ultimately take over management of it. ‘Prada’ is the primary software application used by Recorra staff for day-to-day operations of the business. It is custom software based on an Azure SQL Server database backend, currently with a Microsoft Access front end, enhanced and maintained over the last 13 years.

In terms of experience required for the role, excellent SQL skills are essential. Microsoft Access, or at least a good knowledge of complex VBScript is highly desirable; we have a separate contractor who can support on Access training.

Above all, we are looking for a partner with the right skills to support our business. Depending upon the applications received, we may look for 2 part time or 1 full time developers – please bear this in mind if you are applying for the role and make any expectations clear in your cover letter / application.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete work items on backlog of work resolution of issues and bugs in the system, as recorded and prioritised by the System and Software manager in Azure DevOps
  • Review, prototype and develop Features, as developed in conjunction with the Systems and Software manager and key product users within the business.
  • Work through complex topics with key users in the business to deeply understand problems and help to design the best solution

Other Responsibilities:

  • Work on strategic topics (led by the business vision and directors) to upgrade Prada to fit Recorra’s business needs
  • Complete monthly reviews with the Systems and Software manager and one of the company directors to update on progress, review progress against OKRs and plan in strategic topics for the coming period
  • Complete functional testing of changes, recommend test cases for user acceptance testing, prepare release notes.
  • Plan and complete releases of new major versions (in test and production environments)

About you:

Essential Experience:

  • At least 5 years working as an independent contractor with similar responsibilities
  • Excellent SQL skills
  • Experience developing front end systems
  • Excellent ability to problem-solve, with a data-oriented approach
  • Strong organisational skills with an ability to independently manage and prioritise workload
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • To work to the highest ethical standards and have a genuine interest in protecting the environment

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience using Access as a front end
  • Experience translating Access front ends to a different front end (ideally web-based)
