We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Caretaker and Multi-skilled Tradesperson, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work on their own initiative.

About the role

As a Caretaker in our Prep School you will be working on a regular basis in a school in a role which gives opportunity for contact with children. As such, you will be in regulated activity and an enhanced DBS check (which includes children’s barred list information) will be required in advance of appointment.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility.

Day to day requirements;

  • Maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the school, including classrooms, offices, and common areas (with the support of our Domestic Department);
  • Carrying out minor repairs and maintenance tasks as required;
  • Supporting the Maintenance Department as required during school holidays;
  • Ensuring that all equipment is in good working order and reporting any issues to the appropriate parties;
  • Opening and closing the school each day including setting alarms and checking for any security breaches;
  • Ensuring that the Prep School grounds are well-maintained and litter-free, and
  • Assisting with the setup and breakdown of events and activities as needed.
  • The overarching responsibility for this role is to provide support for Prep School staff and operation of the Prep School.
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.

Main duties and responsibilities;

  • Driving runs for the benefit of the Prep, including, collecting visitors, instruments or equipment.
  • Provide support for Prep School staff and operation of the Prep School.
  • Liaising with the Grounds department in support of the maintenance of the grounds around the Prep School.
  • Clearing the Prep grounds of litter.
  • Support the Domestic life of the school by carrying out regular housekeeping tours and classroom checks.
  • Undertaking general maintenance and up-keep of the Prep School. Liaising with the Maintenance department in support of these tasks, escalating matters where necessary to the Head of Maintenance. This may include the maintenance, repairs and painting of playground equipment.
  • Possibility of directing traffic flow at the front of the Prep during morning drop off and for Pre-Prep/Prep related events. Completing the daily post run(s) to and from the College Main Reception and Staff Common Room.
  • Distribution of post and parcels to specific staff and/or areas, as required.
  • Support Prep reprographics requests in liaison with the Reprographics department in the College.
  • Ensuring effective communication in respect of Prep School issues with Grounds, Maintenance and the Domestic Services Manager.
  • In conjunction with the Prep Headmaster ensure that Health & Safety guidelines are met and when required and that matters are reported to the Health & Safety Officer in a timely manner.
  • Assist with updating of the Prep school works list which includes desired maintenance tasks, for example painting walls, fixture, fittings and furnishings.
  • Ensure that the Prep building is safe and secure at the end of the working day; that windows are shut, lights are off and doors are locked.
  • To assist with the day-to-day operation of the College boilers.
  • To conduct yourself professionally and politely with staff/students at all times.
  • Ensure workshop and stores are kept in a clean and safe condition. To ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and safely stored when not in use.
  • To ensure that all tasks are carried out so as to minimise any risk to staff and students and with minimum disruption to the normal running of the College.
  • Ensure all tasks are carried out to comply with H&S requirements.
  • Be willing to attend relevant training courses.
