Job Title: Policy Manager – Local Public Services

Location: London

Salary: £32,000 – £42,000 per annum plus benefits

Role Overview

We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic, and driven individual to work across our established Local Public Services Programme, a core pillar of our public sector dialogue, and our new Nations & Regions work. Working across these two programmes will give the successful candidate a chance to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders, support events and develop their own skills in partnership development, senior stakeholder management and programme delivery.

Local Public Services Programme Overview

techUK’s Local Public Services Programme represents the supplier community to local and regional government and aims to lead discussion and debate on new technologies, services and support providing a route to engage and bring industry and local government closer together. The programme represents the views of our member companies working with a wide array of partners to improve the delivery of public services.

Nations and Regions Overview

techUK is determined to see the whole of the UK enjoy access to strong digital and technology ecosystems. Our work with our members based across the UK as well as partners and stakeholders in devolved and regional government helps to understand the different strengths and needs of the UK’s diverse tech sector. The Local Digital Capital Index is an important part of this work and how we engage with partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of the strategy for the Local Public Services programme and wider Nations and Regions work, achieving financial targets for the programme in terms of membership recruitment and retention.
  • Help grow new workstreams in the Local Public Services programme and identify new stakeholders and prospects to engage.
  • Implement an engaging programme of events and activities in the delivery of the programme including regional activity, topical and virtual events.
  • Undertake project work including research, development of articles and papers, running campaign activities, submissions to government consultations etc.
  • Raise the profile and engagement with the programmes to techUK members and wider stakeholders through effective, consistent and timely communications including newsletters, social media and regular website content.
  • Represent techUK at senior stakeholder meetings. Speak at high profile events on matters of technology, public service improvement at local level and on techUK regional activity.
  • Write briefings and speeches for techUK senior management on these areas as appropriate.
  • Support the effective public affairs engagement across the programme when required including with the devolved nations, mayoral authorities and local government.
  • Update website programme activity including campaign weeks or policy updates.
  • Any other duties that may be required to support the wider techUK programme activities and team.

Person Specification

Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A great team player.
  • Ability to identify, propose and negotiate new opportunities for techUK;
  • A self-motivated individual with a positive can-do approach who is comfortable working in a high pressure, fast-paced environment with competing demands, and responding to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent administrative skills including experience of minute writing;
  • Ability to use the tools and technologies techUK provides; including but not limited to Microsoft O365, CRM, mobile, online conferencing platforms and home working software.
  • Essential Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of managing or supporting multiple projects;
  • Experience of event organisation;
  • Experience of managing relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and comfortable working with senior individuals in industry and within government.
  • Strong interest in technology, innovation and the tech industry.
  • Desired Knowledge and Experience
  • An understanding of the UK political structures or policy formulation;
  • Experience of working in, or knowledge of the technology and/or IT industry, and the technology landscape of law enforcement, policing and the emergency services;
  • Experience responding to public sector consultations;
  • Experience of working with the media.

This is a full-time role with flexibility to be based in either techUK’s London office, hybrid working or home-based.
