About us:

Garrard Building and Construction Ltd is a family run construction company established in 1946. The Company specialises in building repair and renovation to domestic and commercial properties within an approximate 50-mile radius of its offices in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The majority of work is received through ongoing agreements with repair networks within the insurance sector, although the Company is looking to expand its field of operation.

We are focused on building long term relationships with our clients by adding real value to their own service offering and by providing excellent customer service.

The Company is experiencing continued growth and is looking to strengthen the team by adding additional estimating resource whilst also providing support to others carrying out the estimating function and support to the management team.

About the role:

Reviewing tender enquiries and preparing priced repair schedules for the more complex jobs the Company receives. These will have typical values of between £50k – £250k. In some instances, this will follow on to involve other aspects of financial control on those projects as well as contract management. This role will be involved with some elements of business development, including assisting with client account management and generating new work. There will also be involvement in setting and maintaining company procedure, particularly in connection with estimating. This will follow on to include quality control through audit, to identify compliance and possible training requirements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Efficiently review incoming tender enquiries.
  • Visiting sites and gathering survey data to enable estimating.
  • Prepare tender documents, contracts, budgets, bills of quantity and other documentation.
  • Draft and submit priced schedules on various client scheduling platforms, using schedules of rates.
  • Review schedules and tender documents drafted by others where required (typically on larger/more complex jobs).
  • Act as a referral point for others who are preparing schedules or tender documents.
  • Analyse clients’ BOQs and technical specifications.
  • Price forecasting (when required)
  • Monitor changes to the design and/or construction work and adjust budget projections accordingly.
  • Continued monitoring of projects including highlighting and pricing additional work and variations and submitting regular valuations through the construction phase.
  • Procure or agree on the services of subcontractors for the building project.
  • Measure and value the work done on-site.
  • Procurement of construction materials.
  • Write detailed reports as required.
  • Participate in the audit process for preparing priced schedules.
  • Assist the Commercial Team and Managing Director with managing the various client accounts and/or winning new accounts.
  • Assist with recruitment, where required.

  • A high level of IT proficiency, particularly within Microsoft Excel

  • Able to demonstrate professional communication at all levels
  • Tactful and diplomatic

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • At least 3 years working in a similar role.
  • Understanding of contract preparation, procurement procedures and contract administration.
  • Good awareness of tendering and the estimating process.
  • Experience using schedules of rates
  • Good knowledge of standard building, materials and practices
  • Good knowledge of standard building plant & equipment
  • Working within a team environment
  • Full, clean, UK driving license

Desirable:

  • Line management experience

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility to work outside or in excess of standard hours when necessary to achieve objectives required
  • Satisfactory DBS check which will be arranged by the Company

Hours: 45 hours per week – Monday to Friday 07:30 to 17:30
